Social Welfare Activities of Poh Teck Tung Foundation

 

 

1.  Learning Materials Distribution Project on National Children’s Day

          The Foundation has been preparing notebooks, pencils and rulers with a slogan or a meaningful message for children written on the cover of the notebook and distributing them to students in Bangkok, the suburbs and in provincial areas, since the Government launched the National Children’s Day in B.E.2502. Moreover, the Foundation annually provides a number of notebooks, pencils and rulers through the honorable Prime Minister.

 

2.  Annual Scholarship Award Project

2.1  Scholarships for the Primary School Level

           For about 40 years, the Foundation has awarded primary school level scholarships by selecting 2% of the impoverished students from the total number of primary school children in Metropolitan Bangkok and with a letter requesting for assistance. The Foundation annually awards about 1,350 scholarships of 1,000 baht each.

2.2  Scholarships for the all the Final Levels of Schooling awarded at the Foundation’s Office  (Awarding is scheduled in August)

           Since 2532 B.E., the Foundation has awarded scholarships to pupils and students who are attending the final stage of their schooling level. Candidates for the scholarship are selected from different educational institutions in Bangkok and surrounding provinces. About 96 educational institutions are annual recipients of 400 scholarships with a grand total of 4,000,000 baht.

2.3  Scholarships for the all the Final Levels of Schooling [Traveling Expenses Scholarships] (Awarding is done at Foundation’s Office and scheduled in August after the awarding the Scholarships for the all the Final Levels of Schooling)

           Since 2542, the Foundation has started a pilot project to award local traveling expenses. When the province where awarding will be held is identified, representatives of the Foundation and scholarship recipients of educational institutions in nearby provinces can conveniently travel to the said province to receive the scholarship awards. There are about 33 educational institutions receiving 121 awards with an annual grand total of 1,220,000 baht.

 

The number of awards are divided according to the level of education as follows:

1.  Tertiary Education   (Bachelor Degree) = 21 educational institutions, 105 awards of 20,000 baht each for a total of 2,100,000 baht 

2.  Higher Vocational Diploma     (HVD)     = 26 educational institutions, 104 awards of 10,000 baht each for a total of 1,040,000 baht.

3.  Basic Vocational Diploma     (BVD)       = 26 educational institutions, 104 awards of 8,000 baht each for a total of 832,000 baht.    

4.  Senior High School     (Grade 12)        = 28 educational institutions, 104 awards of 7,000 baht each for a total 728,000 baht.  

5.  Junior High School     (Grade 9)          = 26 educational institutions, 104 awards of 5,000 baht each for a total of 520,000 baht.     

129 educational institutions, 521 awards with a grand total 5,220,000 baht

2.4 Continuing Education (Awarding is scheduled in July)

           The Foundation initiated the Continuing Education Project in 2552 B.E. by selecting student recipients from Bangkok and its suburbs.

3.  Lunch for Indigent Students

Since 2529 B.E., the Foundation has initiated the Lunch Project using a revolving fund. The recipients are schools all over Thailand that are incapable of providing lunch for indigent students. To avail the fund, schools should create a project and propose it to the Foundation for consideration. The Foundation’s revolving fund for this project is from 10,000 to 20,000 baht. Six months after the implementation of the project, the recipient school must report the progress and result to the Foundation, so it can decide any future action such visiting the recipient school.     

4.  Student Volunteers Development Camp

            The Foundation provides rice and other needs to students who requested assistance for conducting development projects in rural communities, and rural schools in remote areas.

5.  Social Welfare Fund for Indigent Patients

           Since 2512 B.E., the Foundation has been allocating an annual social welfare fund for indigent patients in hospitals and health centers in Bangkok and in provincial areas. The healthcare institution receiving the fund screens the indigent recipients. Moreover, the healthcare institution must prepare a monthly report to inform the Foundation of the progress and results of the project.

6.  Rice Ration for Various Agencies

           Since 2523 B.E., the Foundation has been providing a monthly ration of rice to various agencies that requested support from the Foundation in Bangkok and the suburbs such as the metropolitan police stations, emergency centers, and various foundations.   

7.  Visiting Prisoners, and Preparing a Party for the Aged, Banned Individuals and the Aged on Chinese New Year

           Every Chinese New Year, the Foundation prepares things used in daily life and cash then distribute to prisoners, children and the youth and to people banned by the immigration police not to mention the preparation of food in the social welfare unit for the aged. These activities have been conducted for more than 40 years. Visitation is one way to build hope and inspiration for these people.

 

It is divided into the following  programs:  

                        7.1  After asking permission from the Bureau of Corrections, prisoners in the 24 prisons / correctional services both in Bangkok and in nearby provinces are given 50 baht in addition to the provision of daily consumables with a price of about 50 baht. 

                        7.2  After requesting permission from the Bureau of Juvenile Protection, Department of Justice, the children and the youth in 9 juvenile protection centers are given 50 baht in addition to the provision of daily consumables with a price of about 50 baht. 

                        7.3  After contacting the Banned Persons Division of the Immigration Office, the banned individuals are given 100 baht each.

                        7.4  In cooperation with 4 other Chinese foundations, the old people in 3 home for-the-aged sites, the Poh Tech Tung Foundation provides money in amount of 100 baht and daily consumables worth 40 baht. The Foundation also prepares food (Chinese buffet) for the aged and feed them onsite. Annually, the Foundation donates money for these 3 home for-the-aged sites.



8.  Social Welfare for the Ting Krajard Tradition  

            The Foundation holds the annual Ting Krajard Tradition to offer for the souls of the deceased on the 15th of the 7th lunar month in accordance with the Chinese Lunar Calendar.  The Foundation regards this day as one of the important days to for merit-making, when rice, woven hats, egg noodles and other consumables are donated by a large number of believers. 

            8.1   Distribution of consumables at the Foundation’s cemetery at Tamboon Rong Khae, Amphoe Ban Phaew, Samut Sakorn province.

            The Foundation prepares 5,000 sets of consumables and distribute to the people. The Foundation invites the Governor of Samut Sakorn as the guest of honor in the ceremony.

            8.2   Distribution of consumables at the Poh Teck Tung Headquarters

            Through the Governor of Bangkok, the Foundation distributes not less than 30,000 sets of the things annually donated and 700 sacks of rice to employees with low income and to schools in Bangkok amounting to not less 10 million baht per year.

9.  Preserving Religion

The Foundation provides rice and consumables, including learning materials to support Wa-Aram Temple’s Novice Ordination Project during summer and cooperate with various agencies to join merit-making activities during important religious occasions.  

 

10.  Aid for Family Problems

            The Foundation has social welfare experts and permanent social welfare staff who interview and make home-visits to gather more information for considering appropriate recipients of relief items such as cash, rice, consumables, clothing, and others. At present, the Foundation has been providing monthly ration of rice and others to alleviate the sufferings of about 270 individuals. The Foundation also provides help for distressed individuals featured in newspapers and presently residing in Metropolitan Bangkok by sending a staff to help. In case the victims are in the provinces, the Foundation requests the help of government organizations to donate appropriate amount of money and consumables on behalf of the Foundation.  

11.  Support for Disabled Memorial Day

            The Foundation collaborates with the Social Welfare Council in holding Disabled Memorial Day. The Foundation has been appointed as the Chair in Gift Procurement and Aid. Every year, the Foundation procures about 4,000 sets of gifts to be distributed to the disabled individuals who join the activity with a total amount of 800,000 baht (Eight hundred thousand baht).
  

12.  Aid for Disaster Victims

       It is aid for victims of disasters such as natural disasters and disasters caused by human negligence and others namely:

            12.1 Aid for victims of conflagration

            The Foundation coordinates with area or with the district office of every locality that was devastated by a disaster to manage the registration of victims and donate money according to the gathered facts in the amount of 1,000 baht per person. The Foundation also provides 1 set of consumables (price of consumables per set is about 1,000 baht). In case other charitable institutions also donate consumables,   

* the Foundation prepares and distributes food instead to the victims of conflagration in large scale disasters in Metropolitan Bangkok.

            12.2  Aid for flood and typhoon victims

Most of the disasters cause damage to people by destroying their properties, cash and valuables, rice fields, and agricultural products, and they are widespread hampering the provision of aid. The Foundation closely collaborates with the local officials (of the provinces, districts and sub-districts, etc) to help survey and identify the place that needs aid, including the number of affected families, and the number of consumables to be distributed based on need. Government officials may coordinate with the provincial office of Poh Teck Tung.

            12.3 Aid for winter victims

The Foundation has been conducting this project for more than 43 years by procuring winter blankets and distributing it to the poor in far flung areas all over the country. This annual project is coordinated with the local offices of Poh Teck Tung and with local government officers to help survey areas that are befitting recipients of aid. Moreover, the Foundation sometimes supports various agencies that request for help

 

by dividing the work operation into 2 types namely:

            12.3.1  For individuals traveling on their own, there are consumables and winter blankets, that can be distributed to the poor at an approximate price of 550 baht per set.

            12.3.2   Donations can be given through other charitable foundations that can be representatives in  distributing winter blankets together with used clothes at an approximate price of 210 baht per set.             

            12.4 Aid for the 2542 B.E. drought victims  

The Foundation has started a project to procure 20,000-liter capacity water tanks to contain potable water in far flung areas in the Northeast and the North. The project has been expanded to include the Central region in 2552 B.E. As of September 2555 B.E., the project has reached 37 provinces with a total installation of 84 water tanks.

            12.5 Fund for corpse cremation of various disaster victims amounting to 10,000 baht per corpse

  

 

          To request for the fund from the Foundation, the relatives of the deceased must show the death certificate as evidence together with a photocopy of national identification card, and a photocopy of house registration of the recipient (In case of injury, the Foundation will consider the appropriateness of the case and when deemed appropriate, a consolation money in the amount of 1,000 baht per person will be awarded.

13.  Passenger Pavilion Construction

         In the year 2549 B.E., the Foundation started the project to construct and donate passenger pavilions in Metropolitan Bangkok. The project was expanded in the regions in the year 2551 B.E. to protect people from the heat of the sun and rain during rainy season, which is one way to alleviate human problems. In summary, as of September 2555 B.E., the project has already reached 22 provinces with a total construction of 50 pavilion units.

 

14.  Countrywide Chinese School Construction

            The Foundation has been giving financial support for the construction of Chinese schools for a long time. Prospective constructions are considered based on merit. For the fund, the Foundation provides a financial support from 100,000 baht. At present, the revolving fund ranges from 400,000 – 500, 000 baht.     

15.  Distribution of Consumables among Bangkok Communities

           When providing relief for people who need help, the Foundation considers the need in accordance with the current situation. The Foundation distributes consumable relief goods among the local communities in Bangkok.

16. Free Renal Dialysis in Cooperation with Huachiew Hospital

            The Foundation considers the provision of help to a patient by a compulsory interview to inquire basic information pertaining to the patient. Moreover, the Foundation have to make a home visit and regularly follow-up the results. Patients who are intending to request for help from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation will be considered in accordance with existing regulations, and the Foundation will send the list of patients to Huachiew Hospital, so appropriate actions can be taken.
